| 5 Ways video by Tom Gidley Inhabitants was filmed in the area where the clothes and the 5 Ways projects originated – Brick Lane, London. I chose locations that related to the garments and to the thinking behind them. These places also have a powerful sense of dislocation, public spaces that have seen so much change and adaptation and are now waiting for yet more. I wanted to make a portrait both of the location and the model placed within it. The resulting images are jarring but also strangely harmonious – each girl seems out of place yet also at ease with her surroundings. Caught in her own thoughts, but in locations that appear alien and other-worldy but utterly familiar. The theme of transition that runs through all the 5 Ways projects is used in Inhabitants metaphorically; we're all waiting for change even as it is happening, with or without our knowledge or active participation.
