| No Wash The No Wash project is concerned with designing and wearing a garment that is never laundered. Quite simply washing clothes is a chore. It is also a habit and an activity closely tied in with social acceptance, personal and romantic success and happiness. Keeping clean used to be about disease prevention, but now the culture of whiter than white has weakened our immune systems, lined the pockets of detergent manufacturers and led to the startling fact that the energy needed to wash your favourite garment is about six times that needed to make it. Just by washing clothes half as often, overall energy consumption is almost cut by a factor of two. No Wash takes this idea to extremes. Here a jumper is designed not to resist or repel dirt, but to wear it like a badge. Developed in response to a laundry diary that had been kept over the previous six months, which showed majority smell underarms and majority dirt on cuffs, elbows and front panels of garments (here spilt food being the chief culprit), this garment has wipe clean surfaces and extra underarm ventilation. Worn for over six months without washing, No Wash reminds us of our garment’s history… it shows the coffee cup spill, it smells of our soap and reminds us of where we were last night. |
